Stanford launches "Facebook for Parents" class

Tue, Feb 10th, 2009

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince were right: Parents just don't understand.

The latest source of parental confusion: Facebook.

Good news, mom and dad! Now you can get formal learnin' in all things FB, courtesy of -- no, not The Learning Annex -- the hallowed halls of Stanford University, where a "Facebook for Parents" course is set to begin. The class, taught in four sessions, even includes hands-on help from Stanford attendees who guide boomers through the finer arts of friending, creating status updates, and poking other Facebookers safely.

As of 2007, adults over 35 years old accounted for just 9 percent of the Facebook user base, but they also comprise the site's fastest-growing demographic. Of course, many parents who sign up for the site are immediately lost, unfamiliar with the ins and outs of social networking, which at first blush can look and feel quite different than the world of static websites and web-based email.
