Playmesh launches free social iMafia game for iPhone with a twist on virtual goods model
Social games have taken off on platforms such as Facebook and they’re gradually migrating to mobile platforms such as the iPhone. A case in point is the new iMafia game from PlayMesh, which has found a clever way around barriers to the virtual goods model on the iPhone.
Social games such as Mob Wars are popular on Facebook. But Charles Ju, co-founder of PlayMesh in San Francisco, believes that the time is right to migrate these games to the iPhone, which is capable of supporting the same features that make the games popular on the web. The game was released on Friday and it already ranks No. 88 on the AppStore.
With the free iMafia, you can try to rise up in a crime family by doing crimes or shaking down the neighborhood. You can compete with other players (in an asynchronous, not real-time mode), and buy virtual goods that will help you along the way. The graphics are pretty basic, with two-dimensional art work and text-based instructions that give the player a variety of options.
