Twitter Says Advertisers Won’t Be Charged for Tweets

Wed, Feb 11th, 2009

A recent article in a British trade publication has stoked speculation that Twitter might charge advertisers for posting updates, but the microblogging service’s co-founder clarified his comments yesterday, saying it will remain free for everyone.

The co-founder, Biz Stone, said in an interview with Marketing magazine that "We are noticing more companies using Twitter and individuals following them. We can identify ways to make this experience even more valuable and charge for commercial accounts."

Twitter, where users write 140-character updates about what they’re doing, has attracted marketers who want to build buzz online as well as those who want to see what customers are saying about them. Comcast, Sprint and Whole Foods are among the big companies with a Twitter presence, and a handful of Super Bowl advertisers, including H&R Block, Pepsi’s SoBe and E*Trade’s talking baby, took advantage of the medium during the game.
