Whatever happened to the Call Home Act?

In January of 2007 the FCC implemented a portion of the law, and promised to launch a proceeding to find new ways to make GI calls from the Middle East more affordable. Stevens quickly released a statement congratulating the agency. "It can cost soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan as much as 33 cents a minute to call their families in Alaska," he declared. "Today's action by the FCC will immediately provide our troops and their families with access to more affordable communications services."
