DEMO: A show changes with the times

Chris Shipley came up on stage and said she wanted to get something out of the way right away. The executive producer of DEMO 2009 said that this was a "reset year" for everybody. That weak global economy is reflected in the smaller show here in Palm Desert, Calif.

Shipley said that the show is "a little more compact" than a year ago, with 500 people instead of 700 and 39 companies instead of more than 60 a year ago. While some may see that as half empty, Shipley said there is nothing like a recession to cut out the clutter. She said the companies that are appearing have the resources, capital efficiency, and tenacity to tough it out during the hard times.
