Facebook Takes Its Terms to Town Hall, Internet Style
From big brother to open-source advocate: In an about-face of its own, Facebook has announced a new, more open approach to site governance, giving users a chance to provide input into certain policies. The move came in response to outrage Facebook encountered after upating its Terms of Use, angering users and privacy advocates.
Over the past week, Facebook's founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company was reminded that users "feel a real sense of ownership over Facebook, not just the information they share." Indeed, the popular social-networking site was hit by a firestorm of outrage after changing its terms of use in a way that users and privacy advocates feared would give Facebook too much ownership over personal information posted by users on the site.In response to the backlash, Facebook announced it is now asking users to help guide the site's terms of use. Zuckerberg described the move as creating "a new relationship" between Internet companies and the people they serve. He said it results from an increasing amount of information being shared on Web sites.
