Obama’s Inaugural Address: A Tipping Point for Silverlight?

Mon, Jan 19th, 2009

Not to be outdone by sites like Joost and Hulu that are offering live streaming of tomorrow’s Inauguration, the official Presidential Inaugural Committee site has announced that they’ll be streaming too. So who have the powers that be deemed worthy of streaming such an important event? None other than Microsoft and its Silverlight technology.

Microsoft has had several big opportunities to showcase Silverlight in the past - it was pumped and dumped by Major League Baseball and then given the opportunity to shine during the Summer Olympic Games by NBC. But that all could pale in comparison to tomorrow, when millions turn to the Web to view Obama’s inaugural address.

With a potentially massive mainstream audience turning to the Web to watch the coverage, Silverlight will have yet another opportunity to prove itself as a viable, if not better, alternative to Adobe Flash. Will the technology rise to the challenge? Let us know what you think in the comments.
