Science week in review: hacking the brain, green explosives, and dark energy edition
Nobel Intent brought you information from a wide range of disciplinesthis week; from experimental psychology to simulation of fluidmechanics in the cosmos, it was a trip around the world ofscience. In addition to a trip through various length scales, this week sees a report on how well NASA is progressing toward gettinghumans back on the moon, and potentially onto Mars.
The biggest story of the week is one that seems to bring sciencefiction into the realm of science. For anyone who watched Will Smith'sWild Wild West movie, they may recall the absurd scene where KevinKline's character shines a light though a dead man's eyes to see thelast image he observed. Thanks to new work using fMRIs, researcherswere able to reconstructwhat a test subject was looking at with their eyes by lookingat the activity in their brains. While the images were simple 10x10pixel black and white images, the work shows that we're on the righttrack when it comes to understanding the basicsof how image processing is performed by the visual cortex.
