The Rise of the IT Generalist Jack of all Trades; Master of None.

Chances are you work at a company wherein you have to wear many hats.  This has been the case for me anyway.  So much so that I am beginning to wonder if we are living in the age of the IT generalist, as opposed to a specialist.

Generalist.  I first heard that word within the context of the HR department.  During a yearly review meeting, I asked about what the title entailed.  My response was that this person did a little bit of everything for the HR department and didn’t quite specialize in any one thing.   This sure sounded, I thought to myself, a lot like what I had been doing for the IT department though my official title read Technology Support Specialist.

Are we, then, living in a world that expects us to be more generalists than specialists? Personally, I find this to be something I enjoy.  To me, this means I get to do something different each day.  On some days, I might find myself scripting some manual server tasks.  Other days, I am helping end-users troubleshoot an issue. Yet another day, and I am assisting with some server administration tasks.  There is never a time one gets bored, as a new challenge presents itself every day; A new issue to be solved.

Do the rest of you in IT find that you are asked to wear many hats, as they say? How do you feel about this? Is this something you enjoy or would you rather go back to the days wherein one could be a specialist in one’s craft and get by (If such days ever even existed in the first place)?

More importantly, do you see that, in the future, IT specialists will need to become generalists in order to survive in the ever-changing IT landscape?

We often hear the first part of the quote: Jack of all trades; Master of None.  However, the full quote, I feel, conveys a better meaning in terms of the IT generalist: Jack of all Trades; Master of None.. Though oft times better than Master of One.

US Broadband Usage Decreases As More Go Mobile-only

Washington (AFP) – Adoption of home broadband has stalled in the United States, as more Americans opt for Internet on the go with mobile devices, a survey showed Monday.

A Pew Research Center survey found 67 percent of Americans had high-speed Internet at home in 2015, down slightly from 70 percent in 2013.

Pew said that this “small, but statistically significant” decline puts broadband back to 2012 levels, and is likely due to the growing number of adults who are “smartphone only” Internet users.

The decline “could represent a blip or might be a more prolonged reality,” the Pew report said.

Some 13 percent of those surveyed said they used smartphones exclusively for Internet in 2015, up from eight percent two years earlier.

Overall, the percentage with Internet access through either a smartphone or a home broadband subscription has changed little since 2013 — 80 percent this year compared with 78 percent two years earlier.

Pew researchers noted, however, that people dependent on smartphones sometimes face challenges in some online activities, such as applying for jobs.

“Those who are ‘smartphone dependent’ for access encounter distinct challenges,” said researcher John Horrigan.

“If they have both kinds of access, most people prefer to use their smartphone for getting in touch with family or friends but prefer a device that uses a home broadband connection for watching video. At the same time, many ‘smartphone only’ users sometimes struggle to do some of the things they want to do online.”

Many of the “smartphone only” Americans are people with relatively low incomes, African Americans or rural residents.

Those without broadband at home acknowledged they were at a disadvantage in terms of finding a job, getting information about health or government services or keeping up with news.

Among those without home broadband, one-third cited the monthly cost of service as the main reason while 10 percent cited the cost of owning a computer.

Pew found 68 percent in the survey owned a smartphone, a sharp rise from 55 percent two years ago.

The survey also found 15 percent of adults were “cord cutters,” who lack a paid cable or satellite television service.

Many said they are able to get the television they want from online sources like Netflix, Hulu or YouTube.

The report is based on a survey of 2,001 American adults in June and July of 2015, with comparison to research conducted in 2013.

The margin of error for the latest survey was estimated at 2.5 percentage points.

California Proposes Rules For Self-Driving Cars

San Francisco (AFP) – California motor vehicle department officials on Wednesday proposed self-driving car regulations that included mandating that a licensed driver be available and able to take the wheel if needed.

The draft set of rules released by the California Department of Motor Vehicles for a public comment phase would not allow for legal operation of an autonomous car being tested by Google because it lacks a steering wheel or foot pedal controls.

“We’re gravely disappointed that California is already writing a ceiling on the potential for fully self-driving cars to help all of us who live here,” Google said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.

California rules-of-the-road for self-driving cars would have the potential to set precedent, and the proposed regulations were seen as sure to slow down the speed with which the technology would go mainstream.

“The primary focus of the deployment regulations is the safety of autonomous vehicles and the safety of the public who will share the road with these vehicles,” DMV director Jean Shiomoto said in a release.

“We want to get public input on these draft regulations before we initiate the formal regulatory rule-making process.”

Workshops were planned to gather feedback from industry, consumer, academic and advocacy groups as well as from the general public.

The proposed regulations call for a licensed driver to be in a self-driving car and able to take control in the event of a technology failure or other emergency.

“Driverless vehicles are initially excluded from deployment,” the regulations stated, adding that fully autonomous vehicles would be addressed at some later point in a different set of rules.

– Cyberattack defenses –

Instead of being sold, self-driving cars could be leased for “approved deployment periods,” with performance and safety data regularly reported to the department.

The proposed regulations also focused on privacy and cybersecurity, saying vehicle makers must let people know what information is collected aside from data needed for safely navigating streets.

Self-driving vehicles would also need to be equipped with self-diagnostic capabilities that detect and respond to cyberattacks “or other unauthorized intrusions, alert the operator, and allow for an operator override.”

Ford this week said that it has a green light to test self-driving cars in California, and should have them on roads in the most populous US state next year.

The car maker officially enrolled in the California Autonomous Vehicle Testing Program and will begin with self-driving Ford Fusion Hybrid sedans, it said in a release.

Ford boasts of having more than 100 researchers, engineers, and scientists working in its research center in the Silicon Valley city of Palo Alto.

Google has been testing self-driving cars on California roads for a while, and an array of automobile makers including Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, Tesla and BMW are working on building self-driving capabilities into vehicles.

French Railways Test Software To Track Suspicious Behaviour

Paris (AFP) – Software that monitors suspicious behaviour and luggage could eventually be integrated into 40,000 surveillance cameras across France, a railway firm said Wednesday, as the country tightens security after last month’s deadly Paris attacks.

Public transport authorities are looking to technology to better predict warning signs among passengers in the wake of the shootings and bombings that left 130 people dead.

New software being tested by France’s state-owned SNCF tracks changes in body temperature, raised voices and jerky body movements that can indicate heightened levels of anxiety, the rail firm’s general secretary Stephane Volant told AFP.

“We are testing to work out what flags up people with a negative intention, an aggressor, or a groper,” he said, but added what was also being ascertained was the level of “social acceptability” of such software.

Cameras that detect packages left unattended for too long were also under evaluation, Volant said, adding the experiments had the full backing of the law.

Another strand of SNCF’s strategy was the possibility of equipping its staff with wearable cameras to identify fare dodging or suspect behaviour, and in the spring it will launch an app that allows passengers to raise an alert from their smartphones.

A law is also under consideration in France to give SNCF security agents powers to perform security pat-downs and search passengers’ luggage.

France will install security gates at stations in Paris and Lille for the Thalys cross-Europe rail services by December 20 in one of a raft of measures introduced after the Paris attacks, minister Segolene Royal said Tuesday.

A Thalys train from Amsterdam to Paris was attacked by a heavily armed man in August, but he was overpowered by passengers.

The high-speed Thalys service links Paris with Lille in northern France, the Belgian capital, Brussels, Amsterdam in the Netherlands and the western German city of Cologne.

Passengers boarding those trains do not currently have to pass through security checks, unlike for the cross-Channel Eurostar train services to Britain, which have airport-style security.

US Broadband Service Will Become Tax-free Forever

The US House of Representative will vote on this Friday to permanently ban new taxes on internet access by states and local governments. The voting for the same customs and trade enforcement legislation will take place on Monday in the Senate. US broadband subscribers can be assured that there won’t be anymore jacking up of internet/broadband subscription bills if the congress votes as expected in the coming days.

The state and local governments will prevented from imposing any new taxes as well on Internet access and broadband service.

There are some states which levy addition taxes on internet and broadband service. This legislation if passed successfully would also phase out existing taxes over the next four years in seven states — Hawaii, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin. These states imposed taxes in internet access before 1998 when the federal moratorium was passed.

Though advocates of free speech want Facebook to simply refuse to operate in those Islamic countries, Zuckerberg counters it by saying:

A government passing a law that you can’t say something is one barrier against people having a voice. We try to push back whenever we get requests to block something.

Continuing to operate can help the country in other ways, such as allowing people to connect with loved ones, learn, and find jobs. So I think overwhelmingly our responsibility is to continue operating.
